끝까지 붙잡는 믿음이 이깁니다(2026.01.25)

사도 바울은 전도 여행 중 하나님의 인도하심 가운데 환상을 보게 됩니다. “마게도냐로 건너와서 우리를 도우라”(사도행전 16:9)는 간절한 부르심이었습니다. 바울은 이 환상을 하나님의 뜻으로 확신하고 즉시 마게도냐로 건너갔습니다. 그가 도착한 빌립보에서 안식일에 기도할 곳을 찾다가 강가에 모여 있던 여인들에게 복음을 전하게 되었는데, 그 가운데 두아디라 출신의 자색 옷감 장사 루디아가 있었습니다. 성경은 “주께서 그 마음을 열어 바울의 말을 따르게 하셨다”(행 16:14)고 증언합니다. 믿음은 인간의 설득으로 생기는 것이 아니라, 하나님께서 마음을 여실 때 시작됩니다.

루디아와 그의 집안은 모두 세례를 받았고, 그녀의 집은 빌립보 교회의 시작점이 되었습니다. 한 사람에게 임한 하나님의 은혜는 개인의 변화에 그치지 않고, 가정을 변화시키며, 결국 교회를 세우는 능력으로 나타났습니다. 루디아는 이후 고향 두아디라로 돌아가 복음을 전했고, 그 열매로 두아디라 교회가 세워졌습니다. 하나님은 언제나 한 사람을 통해 한 도시를 변화시키는 역사를 이루십니다.

두아디라는 직물과 피혁 산업이 발달한 상업 도시였습니다. 물질적으로는 풍요로웠지만, 영적으로는 우상 숭배가 깊이 뿌리내린 도시였습니다. 신전 중심의 종교 생활은 일상과 분리되지 않았고, 우상에게 바쳐진 제물을 함께 나누는 공동 식사는 사회생활과 경제활동의 중요한 일부였습니다. 이러한 환경 속에서 두아디라 교회의 성도들은 믿음을 지키는 것이 결코 쉬운 일이 아니었습니다. 신앙은 단지 예배당 안의 문제가 아니라, 삶의 현장에서 끊임없이 선택을 요구하는 실제적인 문제였습니다.

이러한 교회를 향해 주님은 사도 요한을 통해 말씀하십니다. “두아디라 교회의 사자에게 편지하라 그 눈이 불꽃 같고 그 발이 빛난 주석과 같은 하나님의 아들이 이르시되”(요한계시록 2:18). 불꽃 같은 눈은 주님의 완전한 통찰을 의미합니다. 주님은 우리의 겉모습만이 아니라, 마음의 동기와 숨겨진 생각까지 다 아십니다. 빛난 주석과 같은 발은 죄와 불의를 심판하시고 온 세상을 다스리시는 주님의 권세를 나타냅니다. 주님은 사랑의 주님이시지만 동시에 공의의 주님이십니다.

주님은 먼저 두아디라 교회를 향해 칭찬하십니다. “내가 네 사업과 사랑과 믿음과 섬김과 인내를 아노니 네 나중 행위가 처음 것보다 많도다”(계 2:19). 주님은 성도들의 수고와 헌신을 잊지 않으십니다. 여기서 말하는 ‘사업’은 단지 장사나 경제 활동만이 아니라, 하나님의 나라를 위해 감당한 모든 사명을 의미합니다. 우리의 직장 생활과 일상, 그리고 교회 안에서의 섬김은 모두 하나님의 영광을 위한 일이 되어야 합니다.

특히 주님은 두아디라 교회의 믿음이 시간이 지나면서 더 자라났다는 점을 기뻐하셨습니다. 믿음은 처음의 열심으로 멈추어서는 안 됩니다. 어제보다 오늘이, 오늘보다 내일이 더 성숙한 믿음이어야 합니다. 처음 사랑을 잃어버린 에베소 교회와 달리, 두아디라 교회에는 사랑과 인내가 계속해서 자라고 있었습니다.

그러나 주님은 동시에 엄중한 책망을 하십니다. “자칭 선지자라 하는 여자 이세벨을 네가 용납함이니”(계 2:20). 이는 구약의 이세벨과 같은 영적 성격을 지닌 거짓 가르침을 의미합니다. 하나님과 우상을 겸하여 섬기게 하고, 신앙의 타협을 정당화하는 가르침이 교회 안에 들어왔고, 교회는 그것을 단호히 거절하지 못했습니다. 주님을 믿는다고 하면서도 세상의 방식과 우상의 가치관을 함께 붙드는 것은 영적 음행입니다. 하나님은 두 마음을 허락하지 않으십니다.

주님은 이들에게 회개의 기회를 주셨습니다. 하나님은 심판보다 회복을 먼저 원하시는 분이십니다. 그러나 회개하지 않을 때, 그에 따른 심판은 피할 수 없습니다. “모든 교회가 나는 사람의 뜻과 마음을 살피는 자인 줄 알지라 내가 너희 각 사람의 행위대로 갚아 주리라”(계 2:23). 하나님은 공의로우신 분이시며, 우리의 선택에 책임을 묻는 분이십니다.

그럼에도 불구하고, 끝까지 믿음을 지킨 자들이 있었습니다. 주님은 그들에게 “다만 너희에게 있는 것을 내가 올 때까지 굳게 잡으라”(계 2:25)고 권면하십니다. 신앙은 끝까지 붙드는 싸움입니다. 환경이 어렵고 유혹이 많을수록, 우리는 더욱 십자가를 굳게 붙들어야 합니다.

주님은 이기는 자에게 놀라운 약속을 주십니다. 첫째는 만국을 다스리는 권세입니다(계 2:26-27). 이는 장차 주님께서 다시 오실 때, 성도들이 그분과 함께 왕 노릇 하게 될 것을 의미합니다. 둘째는 새벽 별을 주시겠다는 약속입니다(계 2:28). 성경은 예수님을 “광명한 새벽 별”(계 22:16)이라 부릅니다. 새벽 별이 뜨면 긴 밤은 끝나고 새로운 아침이 시작됩니다. 이는 고난과 어둠의 시간이 지나고, 영원한 소망과 생명의 날이 도래할 것을 상징합니다.

어떤 시대와 환경 속에서도 믿음을 타협하지 않고, 끝까지 주님을 붙드는 성도들이 되기를 소망합니다. 주님은 지금도 교회를 살피시며, 이기는 자에게 영원한 소망과 영광을 예비하고 계십니다. 어떤 형편에 있을지라도, 믿음을 저버리지 않고, 끝까지 붙잡음으로, 만국을 다스리는 권세와 새벽 별을 받을 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
 

Faith That Holds Fast to the End Will Prevail (Revelation 2:18–29)

 

The apostle Paul, during one of his missionary journeys, was led by God to see a vision. It was an urgent plea: “Come over to Macedonia and help us” (Acts 16:9). Paul was convinced that this vision was God’s will and immediately crossed over to Macedonia. When he arrived in Philippi, he went out on the Sabbath to look for a place of prayer and ended up sharing the gospel with a group of women gathered by the river. Among them was Lydia, a dealer of purple cloth from the city of Thyatira. Scripture testifies, “The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message” (Acts 16:14). Faith does not begin through human persuasion, but when God opens the heart. Lydia and her entire household were baptized, and her home became the starting point of the Philippian church. God’s grace that comes upon one person does not stop at personal transformation; it transforms a household and ultimately becomes the power that establishes a church.

Lydia later returned to her hometown of Thyatira and shared the gospel, and as a result, the church in Thyatira was established. God always accomplishes His work of transforming a city through one person. Thyatira was a commercial city known for its textile and leather industries. Though materially prosperous, it was spiritually steeped in idol worship. Temple-centered religious life was inseparable from daily living, and communal meals involving food sacrificed to idols were an essential part of social and economic life. In such an environment, it was by no means easy for the believers in Thyatira to keep their faith. Faith was not merely a matter confined to worship services, but a practical issue that demanded continual choices in everyday life.

To this church, the Lord speaks through the apostle John: “To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze” (Revelation 2:18). Eyes like blazing fire signify the Lord’s perfect insight. He knows not only our outward appearance, but also the motives of our hearts and our hidden thoughts. Feet like burnished bronze represent the Lord’s authority to judge sin and unrighteousness and to rule over all the earth. The Lord is a God of love, but He is also a God of justice.

The Lord first commends the church in Thyatira: “I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first” (Revelation 2:19). The Lord does not forget the labor and devotion of His people. The “deeds” mentioned here do not refer merely to business or economic activity, but to every mission carried out for the sake of God’s kingdom. Our work, daily lives, and service within the church should all be for God’s glory. In particular, the Lord delighted that the faith of the Thyatiran church had grown stronger over time. Faith must not remain at its initial zeal. Today should be more mature than yesterday, and tomorrow more mature than today. Unlike the church in Ephesus, which had lost its first love, the church in Thyatira continued to grow in love and perseverance.

At the same time, however, the Lord issues a stern rebuke: “You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess” (Revelation 2:20). This refers to false teaching with the same spiritual character as Jezebel in the Old Testament—teaching that encouraged compromise by serving both God and idols and justified accommodation in faith. Such teaching had entered the church, and the church failed to reject it decisively. To believe in the Lord while clinging to worldly ways and idolatrous values is spiritual immorality. God does not permit divided hearts.

The Lord gave them an opportunity to repent. God desires restoration before judgment. But when there is no repentance, judgment is unavoidable. “Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds” (Revelation 2:23). God is just and holds us accountable for our choices.

Nevertheless, there were those who remained faithful to the end. To them, the Lord exhorts, “Only hold fast to what you have until I come” (Revelation 2:25). Faith is a battle of perseverance to the very end. The more difficult the circumstances and the greater the temptations, the more firmly we must cling to the cross.

The Lord gives remarkable promises to those who overcome. The first is authority over the nations (Revelation 2:26–27), meaning that when the Lord returns, believers will reign with Him. The second promise is the gift of the morning star (Revelation 2:28). Scripture calls Jesus “the bright Morning Star” (Revelation 22:16). When the morning star rises, the long night ends and a new day begins. This symbolizes that after times of suffering and darkness, an eternal day of hope and life will come.

May we be believers who never compromise our faith, but hold firmly to the Lord until the end, in every age and circumstance. Even now, the Lord watches over His church and prepares eternal hope and glory for those who overcome. Whatever situation we may face, may we not abandon our faith, but hold fast to the end, and receive the authority to rule the nations and the Morning Star, in the name of the Lord.
