버가모는 로마 제국의 총독부가 있었던 정치·문화의 중심 도시였으며, 20만 권이 넘는 도서가 보관된 지식의 도시였습니다. 많은 사람들이 지식을 얻기 위해 모여들었고, 지적 수준이 매우 높은 도시였습니다. 그러나 이 도시에는 지식에 대한 갈급함만큼이나 영적인 갈급함도 존재했습니다. 그 결과 수많은 우상과 신전들이 세워졌고, 무엇보다 황제를 숭배하는 신전이 무려 세 곳이나 있었습니다.
로마는 피지배 민족들의 종교를 어느 정도 포용했지만, 단 하나의 조건이 있었습니다. 시저의 흉상 앞에서 “시저는 주님이시다”라고 고백하는 것이었습니다. 이 고백은 단순한 정치적 의식이 아니라, 신앙의 본질을 흔드는 요구였습니다. 이러한 이유로 주님께서는 오늘 본문에서 버가모를 가리켜 “사탄의 왕좌가 있는 곳”(계 2:13)이라고 말씀하십니다. 버가모는 우상과 세상 지식으로 가득 찬 도시였고, 영적으로 매우 위험한 환경이었습니다.
그러나 중요한 사실은, 세상이 사탄의 지배 아래 있는 것처럼 보일지라도 하나님은 언제나 그 위에 계신 분이라는 것입니다. 하나님께서 세우신 교회는 세상 가운데 있지만 세상에 속하지 않았으며, 세상은 교회를 이길 수 없습니다. 교회는 사탄이 다스리는 곳이 아니라 하나님께서 다스리시는 곳이며, 교회를 통해 하나님 나라의 모습이 이 땅 가운데 드러나야 합니다. 주님은 이러한 버가모 교회를 향해 칭찬과 책망, 그리고 회개의 촉구와 승리의 약속을 동시에 주십니다.
1. 교회는 하나님의 칭찬을 받아야 합니다 (13절)
주님께서는 버가모 교회를 향해 먼저 칭찬하십니다. 버가모는 “사탄의 권좌가 있는 곳”이라 불릴 만큼 악한 도시였지만, 그곳에서도 성도들은 주님의 이름을 굳게 붙잡았습니다. 특별히 안디바는 “나의 충성된 증인”(계 2:13)이라 불리며 순교를 당했습니다. 정확한 상황은 알 수 없지만, 그는 믿음을 지키기 위해 죽음까지도 감수했습니다.
버가모 성도들 역시 극심한 핍박 가운데서도 주님의 이름을 버리지 않았고, “예수님이 나의 주인이시다”라는 신앙 고백을 부인하지 않았습니다. 인간이 가장 두려워하는 죽음 앞에서, 주님을 부인하면 살 수도 있었을지 모릅니다. 그러나 그들은 생명보다 신앙을 선택했습니다. 마음의 생각과 뜻을 판단하시는 주님께서는 그들의 각오와 믿음을 아셨고, 그 믿음을 칭찬하셨습니다.
이 말씀은 오늘 우리에게 질문을 던집니다. 우리는 과연 어떤 상황 속에서도 주님의 이름을 붙잡을 수 있는 믿음을 가지고 있는가? 세상의 압력과 유혹, 타협의 요구 앞에서 끝까지 신앙을 지킬 수 있는가? 버가모 교회처럼 주님의 이름을 굳게 붙잡는 교회, 주님의 칭찬을 받는 교회가 되기를 소망해야 합니다.
그러므로 우리는 세상의 사상과 타협하지 말아야 합니다. 주님의 말씀을 부정하는 세상의 지식과 가치관에 쉽게 동의해서는 안 됩니다. 우리는 말씀을 중심으로 하나님을 믿고 예수님을 닮아가는 사람들입니다. 끊임없이 좋아 보이는 것으로 유혹하고 타협하게 만드는 것들을 분별하며 싸워야 합니다.
“성도들이 단번에 받은 그 믿음을 지키기 위하여 싸우라”(유 1:3)
“하나님의 계명과 예수를 믿는 믿음을 지키는 성도들에게는 인내가 필요하다”(계 14:12)
예배를 방해하는 것, 말씀 앞에 나아가지 못하게 하는 영적 게으름과 싸워야 합니다. 세상은 우리를 넘어뜨리고 핍박할 것입니다. 이미 수많은 교회가 핍박 가운데 있지만, 우리는 주님을 만날 때까지 싸우며 인내해야 합니다. 그럴 때 하나님께서 반드시 칭찬하시는 교회가 될 것입니다.
2. 교회는 하나님의 책망을 들어야 합니다 (14-15절)
사람은 본능적으로 칭찬을 좋아하고 책망을 불편해합니다. 그러나 하나님은 아무나 책망하지 않으십니다. 책망은 우리가 하나님의 자녀이기 때문에 주어지는 은혜입니다.
“내 아들아, 주님의 징계를 가볍게 여기지 말고, 그에게 꾸지람을 들을 때에 낙심하지 말아라”(히 12:5)
주님께서는 버가모 교회 안에 발람의 가르침을 따르는 자들이 있음을 책망하십니다. 발람은 하나님의 말씀을 알았지만 자신의 이익을 위해 모압 왕 발락의 요청을 받아들였고, 결국 이스라엘 백성들이 우상숭배와 음란에 빠지도록 계략을 꾸몄습니다(민 22–24장). 이는 하나님께서 가장 싫어하시는 죄였습니다. 또한 주님은 발람의 계략과 니골라당의 가르침을 동일하게 보십니다. 니골라당은 육체의 행위가 영혼의 순결에 영향을 미치지 않는다는 잘못된 가르침을 퍼뜨렸습니다. 그러나 성경은 육과 영이 분리되지 않음을 분명히 말합니다. 육체의 타락은 곧 영혼의 타락으로 이어집니다.
“하나님의 말씀은 살아 있고 힘이 있어서 어떤 양날칼보다도 더 날카롭다”(히 4:12)
하나님의 말씀은 겉으로 포장된 신앙과 거짓된 동기를 분별하십니다. 예수님이 다 이루셨다는 이유로 죄 가운데 살아도 괜찮다는 잘못된 믿음을 버려야 합니다. 우리의 행동은 나 자신의 거룩뿐 아니라 다른 이들의 믿음에도 영향을 미칩니다.
하나님은 교인 수나 외적인 성공으로 교회를 평가하지 않으십니다. 거룩함과 순결함을 잃어버린 것에 대해 책망하십니다. 그리고 그 책망은 회개를 위한 사랑의 초청입니다. 하나님의 자녀로서 책망 앞에 겸손히 회개하는 교회가 되어야 합니다.
3. 교회는 말씀을 듣고 승리해야 합니다 (16-17절)
주님은 분명히 말씀하십니다. “그러므로 회개하여라”(계 2:16). 회개하지 않으면 주님의 입에서 나오는 칼로 싸우시겠다고 경고하십니다. 회개는 선택이 아니라 생명의 문제입니다. 자신이 죄인임을 인정하고 주님 앞에 나아갈 때 하나님의 은혜가 임합니다.
주님은 이기는 자에게 약속하십니다. “감추어 둔 만나”와 “흰 돌”입니다(계 2:17). 감추어진 만나는 예수 그리스도를 의미하며, 예수님을 통해 주어지는 구원을 뜻합니다. 흰 돌은 당시 경기에서 승리한 자에게 주어지던 상이자 잔치에 초대받았다는 증표였습니다. 즉, 주님은 승리한 성도들에게 구원과 천국의 초대장을 약속하신 것입니다.
“하나님께서 원하시는 제물은 찢겨진 심령”(시 51:17)입니다.
찢겨진 심령이란 자신의 죄를 아파하고, 말씀 앞에서 철저히 자신을 돌아보는 마음입니다. 죄를 인식하지 못하고 회개하지 않는 신앙은 온전할 수 없습니다. 하나님은 사람을 사랑하시지만, 사람 안에 있는 죄는 미워하십니다. 교회 안의 죄를 그냥 두지 않으십니다.
“아버지께서는 아무도 심판하지 않으시고, 심판하는 일을 모두 아들에게 맡기셨다”(요 5:22)
버가모 교회에 주신 말씀은 분명합니다. 회개하지 않으면 믿음을 지킬 수 없고, 승리할 수 없습니다. 그러나 회개하는 자에게는 반드시 상급이 있습니다. 주님께서 약속하신 만나와 흰 돌은 세상이 줄 수 없는 은혜입니다. 말씀과 성령으로 동행하며, 매일 이 약속을 소망하는 교회가 되기를 축복합니다.
The Church That Receives Praise and Encouragement (Revelation 2:12–17, NIV)
Pergamum was a major political and cultural center of the Roman Empire, serving as the seat of the provincial governor. It was also a city of knowledge, housing a library of more than 200,000 volumes. People from many places gathered there in pursuit of learning, and the intellectual level of the city was remarkably high.
Yet alongside this hunger for knowledge, there existed a deep spiritual thirst. As a result, numerous idols and temples were erected throughout the city. Most notably, there were three temples dedicated to emperor worship.
Rome allowed subject peoples a degree of religious freedom, but with one non-negotiable condition: they were required to confess before the image of Caesar, “Caesar is lord.” This confession was not merely a political ritual; it directly challenged the very essence of Christian faith. For this reason, the Lord refers to Pergamum as “the place where Satan has his throne” (Revelation 2:13, NIV). Pergamum was a city filled with idols and worldly wisdom, making it an extremely dangerous spiritual environment.
However, an important truth remains: even when the world appears to be under Satan’s control, God is always sovereign above all. The Church established by God exists in the world but does not belong to the world, and the world cannot overcome it. The Church is not ruled by Satan but by God, and through the Church the kingdom of God must be revealed on earth. To the church in Pergamum, the Lord gives praise, rebuke, a call to repentance, and a promise of victory.
1. The Church Must Receive God’s Praise (v.13)
The Lord begins by praising the church in Pergamum. Although the city was described as “where Satan has his throne,” the believers held fast to the name of Christ. In particular, Antipas is called “my faithful witness” (Revelation 2:13, NIV), who was put to death for his faith. While the exact circumstances are unknown, it is clear that he was willing to face martyrdom rather than deny Christ.
The believers in Pergamum did not give up their faith even in the midst of severe persecution. They refused to deny the confession, “Jesus is Lord.” When faced with death—the greatest fear of humanity—they may have survived by denying Christ, yet they chose faith over life itself. The Lord, who judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart, knew their faith and praised them for it.
This passage challenges us today. Do we possess a faith that clings to the name of the Lord in every circumstance? Can we remain faithful in the face of pressure, temptation, and demands for compromise? Like the church in Pergamum, we must strive to be a church that holds firmly to the name of Christ and receives the Lord’s praise.
Therefore, we must not compromise with the ideologies of the world. We must not easily agree with worldly knowledge and values that deny the truth of the Bible. We are people who live by the Word, believe in God, and seek to become more like Jesus. We must discern and resist anything that appears attractive yet leads us toward compromise.
“I urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.” (Jude 1:3, NIV)
“This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.” (Revelation 14:12, NIV)
We must fight against anything that hinders worship, against spiritual laziness that keeps us from the Word. The world will oppose and persecute the Church. Many churches are already suffering persecution, but we must endure and continue the fight until we meet the Lord. When we do, God will surely call us a church worthy of praise.
2. The Church Must Hear God’s Rebuke (vv.14–15)
By nature, people enjoy praise and feel uncomfortable with rebuke. Yet God does not rebuke just anyone. His rebuke is an act of grace given to His children.
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you.” (Hebrews 12:5, NIV)
The Lord rebukes the church in Pergamum because some among them held to the teaching of Balaam. Balaam knew God’s Word but pursued personal gain by yielding to the request of Balak, the king of Moab. He devised a scheme that led the Israelites into idolatry and sexual immorality (Numbers 22–24). These were sins that God deeply detested.
The Lord equates the teaching of Balaam with that of the Nicolaitans. The Nicolaitans taught that bodily actions did not affect spiritual purity. However, Scripture makes it clear that body and spirit are not separate. Moral corruption of the body leads to corruption of the soul.
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword…” (Hebrews 4:12, NIV)
God’s Word discerns outward religiosity and hidden motives. We must reject the false belief that because Jesus has accomplished everything, it is acceptable to live in sin. Our actions affect not only our own holiness but also the faith of others.
God does not evaluate the Church by numbers or outward success. He rebukes the loss of holiness and purity. Yet this rebuke is an invitation of love, calling us to repentance. As children of God, we must become a church that humbly repents when confronted with His rebuke.
3. The Church Must Hear the Word and Overcome (vv.16–17)
The Lord speaks clearly: “Repent therefore!” (Revelation 2:16, NIV). If there is no repentance, He warns that He will fight against them with the sword of His mouth. Repentance is not optional—it is a matter of life. When we acknowledge our sin and come before the Lord, His grace is poured out upon us.
To those who overcome, the Lord promises “some of the hidden manna” and “a white stone” (Revelation 2:17, NIV). The hidden manna represents Jesus Christ Himself and the salvation given through Him. The white stone was a symbol of victory and an invitation to a banquet in the ancient world. Thus, the Lord promises salvation and an invitation into the kingdom of heaven to those who overcome.
“My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.” (Psalm 51:17, NIV)
A broken spirit is a heart that grieves over sin and examines itself thoroughly before the Word of God. A faith that does not recognize sin or repent cannot be complete. God loves people, but He hates the sin within them. He does not ignore sin within the Church.
“Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son.” (John 5:22, NIV)
The message to the church in Pergamum is clear. Without repentance, faith cannot be preserved, and victory cannot be achieved. But for those who repent, there is surely a reward. The hidden manna and the white stone promised by the Lord are grace that can be given only by God. May we be a church that walks daily with the Word and the Holy Spirit, holding firmly to this promise with hope and faith.
