어느 마을에 큰 공장을 운영하며 남부럽지 않게 살던 부자가 있었습니다. 그는 신앙생활도 열심히 하던 사람이었습니다. 그러나 어느 해 갑작스러운 홍수로 공장 옆 저수지의 둑이 무너지면서 공장이 물에 휩쓸리고 말았습니다. 물이 지나간 자리에는 모래와 자갈만 남았고, 공장은 흔적도 없이 사라졌습니다. 그는 그 자리에 주저앉아 통곡하며 하나님께 기도했습니다. “하나님, 사랑하는 자에게 합력하여 선을 이루신다고 하지 않으셨습니까? 이 극한 환난 속에서도 제가 소망을 잃지 않도록 붙잡아 주옵소서.” 기도를 마친 후 주변을 살피던 그는 햇살에 반짝이는 것을 발견했습니다. 홍수로 인해 땅속에 묻혀 있던 사금이 드러난 것이었습니다. 그 위기를 통해 그는 이전보다 더 큰 부를 얻게 되었습니다.
그리스도인이라면 누구나 시험을 경험합니다. 같은 시험을 겪어도 어떤 사람은 믿음이 자라고, 어떤 사람은 오히려 더 무너집니다. 그 차이는 시험의 크기가 아니라 시험을 어떻게 받아들이느냐에 달려 있습니다. 시험의 의미를 알고, 그것을 믿음으로 받아들이는 태도가 중요한 것입니다. 오늘 본문에서 아브라함에게 찾아온 가장 큰 시험은 하나님께서 그의 독자 이삭을 번제로 바치라고 명령하신 사건입니다. 이삭은 아브라함이 거의 백 세가 되어 기적으로 얻은 외아들이었고, 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않을 아들이었습니다. 그런데 하나님은 그 아들을 죽음의 제단에 올려놓으라고 하셨습니다. 아브라함은 이해할 수 없지만 하나님을 신뢰하며 순종의 길을 선택했습니다.
사람의 이성과 상식으로는 도저히 이해할 수 없는 일이었습니다. 하나님께서 이삭을 통해 큰 민족을 이루시겠다고 약속하신 분이, 그 이삭을 번제로 바치라 하셨기 때문입니다. 그러나 아브라함은 자신의 판단을 내려놓고 하나님의 신실함을 믿었습니다. 하나님께서 신실하시다면, 이삭을 바친다 하더라도 약속은 반드시 이루어질 것이며, 이를 위해 하나님께서 이삭을 다시 살려주실 것이라는 믿음이 그의 마음에 자리 잡았습니다.
시험의 의미는 성경에서도 분명히 말씀하고 있습니다. 야고보서 1장 2절부터 4절에는 이렇게 기록되어 있습니다. “나의 형제자매 여러분, 여러분이 여러 가지 시험을 당하거든, 그것을 모두 기쁘게 여기십시오. 여러분의 믿음이 시험을 거쳐서 인내를 낳는다는 것을 여러분은 알고 있습니다. 인내를 끝까지 이루십시오. 그러면 여러분은 온전하고 완전하여, 조금도 부족함이 없게 될 것입니다.” 또한 시편 119편 71절에서는 “고난을 당한 것이 나에게는 오히려 유익이 되었습니다. 그 고난으로 말미암아, 나는 주님의 율례를 배웠습니다.”라고 고백합니다. 시험은 우리를 무너뜨리기 위해 주어지는 것이 아니라, 우리를 성숙하게 하기 위해 주어지며, 고난은 인간을 겸손하게 합니다.
아브라함은 시험의 끝에서 하나님의 음성을 들었습니다. “그 아이에게 손을 대지 말아라. 그 아이에게 아무 일도 하지 말아라. 네가 네 아들, 네 외아들까지도 나에게 아끼지 않았으니, 이제야 네가 하나님을 경외하는 줄을 내가 알았다.”(창세기 22:12) 저 역시 인생의 위기 속에서 준비하시는 하나님을 경험했습니다. 미국에서 사역하던 중 비자 문제로 모든 사역을 내려놓고 한국으로 돌아와야 했고, 이후 한 교회에 부임했다가 오해로 인해 갑작스럽게 사임하게 되었습니다. 거처와 사역, 아이들의 학교 문제까지 한꺼번에 겹치며 막다른 골목에 서게 되었을 때 간절히 기도했습니다. “하나님, 이왕 이렇게 된 것이라면, 가정교회를 제대로 하는 공동체에서 사역하게 해 주십시오. 그래서 주님이 원하시는 영혼 구원과 제자 삼는 일에 최선을 다해 나아가겠습니다! 저희를 주님이 원하시는 곳으로 이끌어 주세요!” 이후 하나님은 저를 천안아산제자교회로 인도하셨고, 그 위기는 새로운 사역의 자리로 이어졌습니다.
아브라함이 이삭과 함께 모리아 산으로 올라갈 때, 이삭은 아버지에게 묻습니다. “불과 나무는 있는데, 번제로 바칠 어린 양은 어디 있습니까?” 아브라함은 대답했습니다. “얘야, 번제로 바칠 어린 양은 하나님이 손수 마련하여 주실 것이다.”(창세기 22:8) 또 그는 종들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 이 아이와 함께 저기 가서 예배를 드리고, 다시 여러분에게 돌아오겠다.”(창세기 22:5) 아브라함은 자기와 아들이 함께 돌아올 것을 믿고 있었습니다. 하나님은 어린 숫양을 준비하셨고, 아브라함은 그곳을 여호와 이레라 불렀습니다. 여호와 이레는 주님께서 미리 보시고 준비하신다는 뜻입니다. 하나님은 우리의 현재만 보시는 분이 아니라, 우리의 미래를 이미 내다보시고 준비하시는 분이십니다.
이 모리아 산의 제단을 준비하신 하나님은, 훗날 예루살렘 성 밖 갈보리 언덕에서도 제단을 준비하셨습니다. 하나님은 인류의 죄를 위해 자신의 아들 예수 그리스도를 속죄의 제물로 내어주셨습니다. 요한은 예수님을 가리켜 “보라, 세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양이다”라고 증언하며, 요한복음 3장 16절에는 이렇게 기록되어 있습니다. “하나님께서는 세상을 이처럼 사랑하셔서 외아들을 주셨습니다. 이는 그를 믿는 사람마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하시려는 것입니다.” 아브라함도 내어주기 어려웠던 외아들을, 하나님은 우리를 위해 기꺼이 내어주셨습니다. 링컨 대통령의 죽음으로 노예들이 자유를 얻었던 것처럼, 예수 그리스도의 십자가로 우리는 죄에서 자유한 새 인생을 얻게 되었으며, 이것이 복음이자 여호와 이레의 하나님께서 우리를 위해 준비하신 구원의 길입니다.
오늘 본문에서 아브라함은 하나님이 어디까지 요구하실지, 끝이 무엇일지 알지 못한 채, 그저 하나님의 말씀 하나를 붙들고 한 걸음씩 나아갔습니다. 불확실한 상황과 여건 속에서도 순종으로 나아간 그는 여호와 이레의 하나님을 만났습니다. 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 믿음의 본질은 모든 것이 이해되어야 하는 것이 아니라, 설명되지 않아도 하나님을 신뢰하며 나아가는 것입니다. 아브라함이 걸어간 길은 특별한 믿음의 영웅만 걷는 길이 아니라, 오늘을 살아가는 우리 모두가 부름받은 믿음의 길입니다.
오늘은 새해 첫 주일입니다. 아직 펼쳐지지 않은 한 해를 앞에 두고 있지만, 하나님께서 오늘도 우리와 함께하시며 이미 우리의 앞날을 준비하고 계십니다. 새해를 맞이하며 두려움과 염려가 마음을 붙들고 있다면, 작년의 실패와 상처가 정리되지 않은 분들도 있을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 말씀하십니다. “너의 길은 내가 준비한다. 너는 나를 신뢰하며 걸어오너라.” 독생자를 아끼지 아니하시고 십자가에 내어주신 하나님께서 우리의 새해를 책임지십니다. 새해의 출발선에서 이렇게 고백합시다. “주님, 올해도 제 인생의 주인은 제가 아니라 주님이십니다.” 계획보다 순종을, 확신보다 신뢰를 선택하며 걸어가십시오.
예수님 때문에 미친 사람, 영혼 구원하여 제자 삼는 일에 미친 사람들이 되십시오. 바쁘겠지요? 힘들 겁니다! 그러나 예수님께 미치면, 영혼 구원하여 제자 삼는 일에 미치면 이런 일들이 여러분에게 일어나게 됩니다.

There was a wealthy man who lived in a village, operating a large factory and lacking nothing in life. He was also a devoted christian. One year, however, a sudden flood caused the reservoir dam next to his factory to collapse, and the factory was swept away by the water. When the floodwaters receded, only sand and gravel remained. The factory had completely disappeared.
Sitting down on the devastated land, he cr
ied out and prayed to God:
“God, did You not say that in all things You work for the good of those who love You? Please hold on to me so that I do not lose hope even in this extreme trial.”
After finishing his prayer, he looked around and noticed something sparkling in the sunlight. It was gold dust that had been buried underground, now exposed by the flood. Through this crisis, he ended up gaining even greater wealth than before.
Every Christian experiences trials. Yet, even when facing the same trial, some people grow in faith while others collapse. The difference is not the size of the trial, but how one receives it. It is a matter of whether we understand the meaning of the trial and accept it by faith.
Today’s passage records the greatest test in Abraham’s life. God commanded Abraham to offer his only son Isaac as a burnt offering. Isaac was the son Abraham had received by a miracle when he was nearly a hundred years old—his one and only son, precious beyond words. Yet God told him to place that son on the altar of death.
Standing before this command, Abraham faced a crossroads. He could have complained against God and fallen into despair because it made no sense, or he could trust God and obey even without understanding. Abraham chose the latter.
God’s command was completely beyond human reason and logic. God had promised to make Abraham into a great nation through Isaac, yet now He was commanding Abraham to sacrifice him. Abraham could not possibly understand why a just and merciful God would give such a command.
Nevertheless, Abraham laid down his own judgment and trusted God. If God was faithful, then even if Isaac were sacrificed, the promise would surely be fulfilled. Abraham believed that God would even raise Isaac from the dead if necessary.
The meaning of testing is clearly taught in Scripture. James 1:2–4 (NIV) exhorts us: “Consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” It goes on to say that perseverance must finish its work so that we may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Likewise, the psalmist confesses in Psalm 119:71 (NIV), “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.”
Trials are not given to destroy us, but to form and mature us, and suffering has a way of leading us into humility before God. Abraham heard the voice of God at the conclusion of his test. In Genesis 22:12 (NIV), the Lord said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy… Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”
I, too, have experienced the preparing hand of God in the midst of personal crisis. While serving in ministry in the United States, I was forced to lay down all my pastoral responsibilities due to visa issues and return to Korea. After being called to serve at a local church, I later had to resign abruptly because of misunderstandings. Housing, ministry placement, and my children’s schooling all became uncertain at once, and I found myself at a complete dead end.
In that moment, I cried out earnestly in prayer:
“Lord, if this is how things must be, then please lead me to a church community that is truly committed to the house church model. Allow me to devote myself fully to what You desire—the salvation of souls and the making of disciples. Please guide our family to the place You have prepared for us.”
In response to that prayer, God led me to Cheonan Asan Disciple Church, and what seemed like a crisis became the doorway into a new season of ministry ordained by the Lord.
Today’s passage shows us that Abraham did not know how far God would require him to go or what the end would be. He simply held on to God’s Word and took one step at a time. Even amid uncertainty and difficult circumstances, he walked in obedience and encountered the God who provides, Jehovah Jireh. Beloved brothers and sisters, the essence of faith is not that everything must be fully understood, but that we trust God and move forward even when we cannot explain everything. The path Abraham walked is not only for extraordinary heroes of faith—it is the very path of faith to which all of us, living today, are called.
Today is the first Sunday of the New Year. Although the year ahead is yet to unfold, God is with us today and has already prepared our future. As we enter the New Year, some of us may feel fear and anxiety, or carry the unhealed wounds and failures of the past year. Yet God says, “I prepare your way. Trust Me and walk forward.” Just as God did not withhold His only Son but gave Him up on the cross, He is fully in charge of our new year. At the starting line of this year, let us confess together: “Lord, You are the Lord of my life this year, not me.” Choose obedience over plans, trust over certainty, and walk forward.
Be people who are crazy for Jesus, people who are passionate about saving souls and making disciples. Will it be busy? Yes. Will it be hard? Yes. But when you are crazy for Jesus, when you are passionate about saving souls and making disciples, this is what God will do in and through your life.
